Be the Boss of Your Knitting
Intermediate - Advanced Workshop
Wednesdays, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm with Debby Hess
We’re thrilled to introduce our newest teacher, Debby Hess! With a rich background in education and a lifelong love of knitting, Debby brings both warmth and expertise to our community. Her teaching style is empowering and full of humor, making every class a space where knitters feel supported, inspired, and free to explore their creativity.
Already comfortable with the basics but ready to take your knitting to the next level? This class is designed for knitters who have mastered foundational stitches and are eager to expand their skills, explore new techniques, and tackle more complex projects.
In this hands-on, small-group workshop, you’ll:
🧶 Perfect your tension and stitch consistency
🧶 Learn advanced stitch patterns and textures
🧶 Explore shaping techniques like short rows, increases, and decreases
🧶 Work with charts and pattern reading for intricate designs
🧶 Experiment with cables, lacework, and colorwork (including Fair Isle and intarsia)
🧶 Pick up tips for fixing mistakes without ripping back rows
Whether you want to knit a show-stopping sweater, a delicate lace shawl, or your first colorwork hat, this class will give you the confidence and know-how to make it happen.
Prerequisites: Students should be comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off without assistance.
About the Class Name
Debby has always called her class “Be the Boss of Your Knitting.” The phrase comes straight from her days supervising lunch recess, when a 1st grader would insist, “You’re not the boss of me!” Debby brings that spirit of independence into knitting: it’s your knitting, your project, your choice. You get to decide what you like, what you want, and what to do—an empowering approach that helps knitters take charge of their craft.
Humor is central to Debby’s teaching. In her words, “We get to take our knitting seriously, but not ourselves.” That mix of skill-building and lightheartedness makes her workshops as fun as they are transformative.
About the Instructor: Debby Hess
Debby has a background in teaching, with a career in both Special Education and elementary classrooms. For many years, she taught grades 4 and 5—where all of her students learned to knit!
Her own knitting journey began at age eight, taught by a Scottish woman who had grown up in a time when knitting was a necessity, not a hobby. That practical, hands-on approach continues to inspire Debby’s teaching today.
