You know how to knit. Now it’s time to be the boss of your knitting.
Be the Boss of Your Knitting is an ongoing workshop for intermediate and advanced knitters who are ready to take on more challenging projects, strengthen their skills, and become more confident problem-solvers.
Bring the project you want to knit—a sweater, intricate colorwork, cables, lace, a complicated pattern, or something completely new—and Debby will help you work through the techniques and puzzles you encounter along the way.
In this supportive, small-group workshop, you’ll build skills such as:
- Reading and understanding more complex patterns and charts
- Shaping, short rows, increases, and decreases
- Cables, lace, colorwork, Fair Isle, and intarsia
- Improving tension and stitch consistency
- Understanding construction and making thoughtful modifications
- Recognizing and fixing mistakes—often without ripping everything out!
- Developing the confidence to make decisions about your own knitting
Every student brings a different project, which means every class is a little different. Bring your knitting, your questions, and whatever has you stuck.

Why “Be the Boss of Your Knitting”?
The name comes from Debby’s years in education. While supervising first-grade lunch recess, she would occasionally hear an indignant little voice announce, “You’re not the boss of me!”
Debby took that spirit of independence and brought it to knitting.
It’s your knitting. Your project. Your choice. You get to decide what you like, what you want to make, and how you want to make it. Debby helps give you the skills and confidence to make those decisions for yourself.
And while Debby takes knitting seriously, she doesn't believe we need to take ourselves too seriously. Her workshops are filled with learning, encouragement, problem-solving, and plenty of humor.
About Debby Hess
Debby brings a lifetime of knitting and a career in education to every class. She taught both Special Education and elementary school, including many years teaching fourth and fifth grade—where all of her students learned to knit!
Debby learned to knit at age eight from a Scottish woman who grew up when knitting was a necessity rather than a hobby. That practical, hands-on approach continues to influence the way Debby teaches today.

Prerequisites: Students should already be comfortable with foundational knitting skills and be able to work independently on the basics.
