In knitting, a steek is a bridge of extra stitches worked into a project that is knit in the round, allowing you to later cut an opening for a cardigan front, an armhole, or a neckline. The process is most commonly associated with Fair Isle or other stranded colorwork, as it allows for uninterrupted knitting of the colorwork pattern.

Prerequisites: Students should be comfortable knitting in the round and following basic colorwork (Fair Isle) patterns.

Description:
Unlock one of knitting’s most magical techniques — steeking! In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to safely cut your knitting to turn a seamless tube into a cardigan, armhole, or neckline opening. We’ll walk step-by-step through how to plan, reinforce, and cut your steek so you can approach this transformative skill with confidence (and maybe even a little excitement!).

THURSDAY NIGHTS 6-7:30pm

October 30th, November 6th, 13th, and 20th.

You’ll practice on a small swatch — perfect for experimenting without fear — and learn:

  • How to set up and plan steeks in your knitting pattern

  • Different methods for reinforcing your stitches (crochet, sewing machine, or hand-sewn options)

  • How to safely cut your knitting without unraveling

  • Finishing techniques for neat, secure edges

By the end of class, you’ll understand not only how to steek, but when and why to use this technique — opening up a world of possibilities for colorwork sweaters and other projects.

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted-weight wool yarn (non-superwash) in two contrasting colors

  • US 5-6 knitting needles. 9", 32", or DPNS.

  • Small scissors

  • Crochet hook (size 3.75mm - 4.00mm)

  • Tapestry needle

Provided in Class:

  • Worsted-weight wool yarn (non-superwash) in two contrasting colors

  • Demonstrations and instructor support at every step

Takeaway:
Walk away with the skills (and courage!) to cut your knitting — and the confidence to tackle steeked sweaters, vests, and more. Your finished project is a gorgeous knitted cup sleeve (koozie).
